The TestDaF is the main language test for international candidates who wish to certify their proficiency in German. It can be taken at more than 500 test centers in around 100 countries.
Target Audience
The TestDaF is primarily intended for individuals who plan to pursue higher education in Germany or Luxembourg. The certificate officially confirms that they have the language skills required to begin university studies.
Test Structure
At the INLL, the digital version of the TestDaF is offered. The test is taken online, on a computer, and includes four components: reading, listening, writing, and speaking. These components assess communicative tasks and the essential language skills needed for academic study. The total duration of the test is 3 hours and 15 minutes.
Scoring and Certificate
Each of the four components is assessed separately. Each part is graded according to one of the three TestDaF levels: TDN 3, TDN 4, or TDN 5. There is no overall score. These levels correspond to levels B2 and C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL). For the digital TestDaF, results are available approximately four weeks after the exam session and can be viewed online via the participant portal. The TestDaF certificate is valid indefinitely and is recognized by all German universities. Participants must download and print their certificate themselves via the TestDaF portal; no postal delivery is provided.
